I Need A Doctor! Dr. Dre Loses Lawsuit To Dr. Drai
Believe it or not, the former N. W. A. frontman-turned-music-mogul Dr. Dre has been involved in a legal battle for the rights to his name for years.
And he was not involved in a battle with Dr. Dre — headquarters in New York, the former co-host of Yo! MTV Raps.
Rather, he was embroiled in a battle with a Pennsylvania-based OB/GYN appointed Doctor Drai.
And what is worse, Dre (born Andre Young) has just lost the battle!
TMZ reports that the Doctor Drai, the gynaecologist, and has been going by "Dr. Drai" for years (even went so far as to book appearances and book tours the name), although his real name is Dr. Draion M. Burch. Drai the gynecologist has even been booking himself as a "media personality" out of the strength of your game-of-words, which has the original (at least, in the West Coast original) Dr. Dre to file a lawsuit.
Dre the rapper says that Drai the gynecologist has a name that sounds "very similar" to his professional name. Dre the rapper, essentially, was claiming trademark dilution, which gives the owner of a "famous mark" reasons to argue that other users may not use the mark in such a way that "dilutes" its uniqueness.
The judge in the case held that, while Dr. Dre and the Doctor Drai certainly sounded similar, there was not enough evidence to suggest that the "confusion" between the name (because, let's be honest, no one is going to download a mixtape of a 'girl doctor'. People don't even download mixtapes of their family members...).
Long story short: case closed.
