Phife Dawg's Posthumous Album Still in Search Of "The Right Deal," Says Redman
Funk Doctor Spock reveals that he worked with Phife and Busta Rhymes in one of the videos.
Redman shared a bit of insight on Phife Dawg's awaited album posthumously during a recent interview with The Combat Jack Show. The veteran rapper explained that the project has not yet found a start tag, despite Phife efforts to find one before his death in March last year.
"Rest in peace Phife Dawg. I'm lucky enough to be in his last days before he died," Redman says at around the 28 minutes of audio before. "To me, him and Busta [Rhymes] recorded a video. Now when you say that this new Phife Dawg album is ridiculous, I! He sat waiting to get the right deal so you can get out. But we have a video of me, Busta, and Phife Dawg. Your album is like some old back-in-the-day – I, his album is ridiculous. That is really what I'm looking for."
Throughout his career, A Tribe Called Quest had links with both Jive and Epic Records, while Phife released his only solo album, 2000 Ventilation: Da LP, through Groove Attack Records.
"I have the hope of finding the most appropriate offer for that, and get platformed in the right way, where we can all help push the shit and make Phife happy," Redman continues. "Because I've never seen Phife as happy as he was in his last days, he sees me and Busta in a video with him. He was so happy and I have seen it in his eyes. I could see the pain that was going on [as] to what he was going on internally, but he was happy and he little knew it, was in peace, bruh. That is what I'm looking forward to, man: it's really the release of that album, so he can really rest in peace the right way."
At the end of 2016, Phife Dawg, the wife of Desha Head Taylor, said that the Five-Foot Assassin's posthumous album was on the way to arriving at the beginning of 2017.
"Your solo album will be probably sometime during the first quarter of 2017," the Head, " Taylor said at the time. "We're working on it now. He completed his entire solo album before the transition, so we are excited about the release".
